Jega right to push poll dates to military -APC
The All
Progressives Congress has agreed with the Chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who said only the
military could guarantee the March 28th date for the re-scheduled
general elections.
National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this in response to inquiries from The Punch, on Thursday.
He was
reacting to the presentation by the INEC boss who told Senators that he
could not give guarantees on matters which were not within his powers as
chairman of the electoral management body.
Mohammed
said, “Jega is right because by the decision of the military to write
INEC that they cannot guarantee security for the elections, they have
taken away that power to fix the date of elections from INEC.
“As far as
Jega was concerned, the commission was prepared for the elections as
early as February the 14th. Nobody can accuse Jega because he has to
rely on our security services to provide security for personnel and
equipment. So he is correct.
“It was
Jonathan that propelled the security to arm-twist Jega to postpone the
elections. It is our hope and prayer that they would not do anything to
tamper with the March 28th date they have set.”
The party spokesman said the APC had prepared adequately for the elections long before the date was shifted from February 14th.
He
enjoined Nigerians especially party supporters to remain vigilant
because vigilance is the price we all have to pay for our freedom.
