5G could make video holograms a reality says Ofcom
UK telecom watchdog Ofcom has announced
the beginning of a consultation on 5G, calling on industry players to
help lay the foundations for the future mobile data network.
The consultation, which the regulator kicked off on Friday, will discuss how the 6GHz radio spectrum could be used and what new services it could potentially enable.
If it brings the 10-50 gigabits per second data speeds it’s predicted to, then Ofcom claims 5G could “support a variety of uses, ranging from financial trading and entertainment to gaming and holographic projections.”
It’s that last one that really caught our interest, after all, who wouldn’t want to see Star Wars-esque video holograms become a reality? Before you get too excited though, Ofcom says 5G won’t be up and running until 2020 so for now you’ll have to make do with bog-standard phone calls.
Acting Ofcom CEO Steve Unger said: “We want the UK to be a leader in the next generation of wireless communications. Working with industry, we want to lay the foundations for the UK’s next generation of wireless communications.
“5G must deliver a further step change in the capacity of wireless networks, over and above that currently being delivered by 4G. No network has infinite capacity, but we need to move closer to the ideal of there always being sufficient capacity to meet consumers’ needs.”
At least Ofcom is getting its act together on 5G and starting discussions early. The regulator will be aware about making the same mistake twice, after it took so long to introduce 4G in the UK.
